Writer Day 4: Slow Motion

Hello Scribes,

Yesterday during our family time we walked past a store with realistic looking mannequins. My daughter stopped walking and posed. It was so funny that my husband (not really him but mostly me) started posing too. We would be walking down the sidewalk, stop suddenly and do a mannequin pose. It was hilarious; neither of us knew when the other was going to stop and pose. When my daughter and I stopped at the same time we laughed even harder.

People walking past us weren't paying attention or they were annoyed that we took over the sidewalk with our lifelike mannequin poses. We didn't mind them, for us, the fun was in trying to surprise one another with an untimely pose. This made me think about how if we take time to slow down, we can find joy in small things that we often overlook.

Today for your Scribe Challenge I encourage you to try the mannequin game. Just stop walking and do a funny pose with your arms out or legs up. Stay in that position for a few seconds. It sounds really silly, and you may not be a fun-loving person but as a writer, taking the time to slow down is really important.

When we write, the words flow so quickly that sometimes we can't capture everything that our mind is thinking. Some of us edit as we write so we don't ever get the full picture of the message because we change it in process. Taking the time to slow down, to be intentional about how you move and write will help you see, hear, smell, or observe great content for your writing.

I'd love to see some photos of your mannequin poses.

Going in Slow Motion,
